Secure Robot Software Updates protection and verification mechanisms for firmware, operating-system and application updates on robotic systems. [1]
Update chain
An update system may sign release artifacts, distribute them over authenticated channels and verify signatures before installation. Version checks and rollback rules should be designed for devices that can lose power or connectivity.
Operational risk
Changing the robot’s perception, planner or controller may alter behavior even when the software package is authentic. Deployment therefore requires testing and a way to recover from unacceptable changes. [2]
Fleet considerations
Operators need visibility into installed versions, supported maintenance windows, vulnerabilities and which devices have successfully updated. Offline equipment may need a different update pathway. [3]
Security and safety
Secure software development and firmware resilience are relevant to update integrity; safety validation is a separate requirement that depends on the machine and its application.
