NIST AI Risk Management Framework nIST guidance for organizing the identification, analysis and management of risks associated with artificial intelligence. [1]
Framework core
NIST AI RMF 1.0 organizes risk management through four functions: GOVERN, MAP, MEASURE and MANAGE. The framework addresses organizational responsibilities as well as system-specific analysis.
Applying it to physical systems
In robotics, risk analysis must include data and model behavior alongside deployment context, interactions with people, physical hazards and system security. The framework can help structure questions, but does not replace engineering safety standards. [2]
Status in 2026
NIST states that AI RMF 1.0 is being revised. The fact of an ongoing revision should not be treated as evidence that a replacement final version has already been released.
Practical interpretation
Organizations can document intended uses, affected stakeholders, testing evidence, monitoring plans and responses to discovered risks. A claim of alignment is not itself a certification.
