Machine identity and security connects device and service identifiers with authentication, credential management, access control and secure operation. The subject includes industrial controllers, cloud workloads and robotic systems; it does not imply a single global machine identity authority. [1]

Identity and credentials

Machines may be represented by inventory IDs, certificates or public keys. Credential enrollment, secure storage, rotation and revocation help maintain continuity as systems are installed, modified or retired. [2]

Security controls

Verified identity is a prerequisite for many access decisions, but it cannot replace software integrity, network protections or safety constraints. Zero trust principles avoid assuming that a machine is trustworthy merely because it is inside a particular network. [3]

Physical AI contexts

Connected robots often combine multiple identities for a robot chassis, embedded compute units, controllers and services. The security and safety implications depend on how these identities relate to real equipment and operator responsibilities. [4]
