Internet of Things (IoT) refers to connected physical devices that sense, exchange or act on information through communications networks. Examples include industrial sensors, building controllers, environmental monitors and consumer connected products. [1]

Architecture

Devices may exchange data with gateways, edge processors, cloud services or each other. Not every IoT device uses artificial intelligence, and not every AI robot is permanently connected to the Internet. [2]

Cybersecurity

NIST IR 8259A describes baseline IoT device capabilities relevant to cybersecurity, including identification, configuration, data protection and software updates. The appropriate control set varies according to device capabilities and risks. [3]

Industrial use

Manufacturing and other infrastructure settings may combine IoT components with industrial control systems and digital twins. These deployments require careful attention to lifecycle support, operational uptime and trusted device management. [4]
