Machine-to-machine communication (M2M) means information exchange between devices, controllers or services with limited direct human participation in each message. Industrial networks, IoT deployments and robotic fleets may all use machine-to-machine communication. [1]

Communication arrangements

Messages may be sent over wired or wireless links through direct connections, gateways or message brokers. Designs differ in latency, bandwidth, reliability and how devices identify their communication partners. [2]

Security and trust

A secure deployment considers authenticated endpoints, authorized commands, protected data, update mechanisms and recovery from lost connections. Identities are particularly useful when many devices are enrolled and retired over time. [3]

Real-world limits

Network interruptions, time drift or malformed commands can have physical effects if the receiving system drives machinery. Critical functions may need local safeguards independent of remote messages. [4]
