History of robotics examines the development of programmable machines, automatic control and robotic applications. Historical mechanical automata preceded modern robotics, but industrial robots became practical through advances in engineering, electronic control and programmable motion. [1]

Industrial beginnings

George Devol and Joseph Engelberger were important figures in early industrial robotics. The Unimate system was deployed at a General Motors plant in 1961, an event frequently highlighted in histories of industrial robotics. [2]

Expansion of applications

Industrial manipulators spread in manufacturing, followed by a widening range of mobile, medical, inspection, warehouse and service robots. The level of autonomy, sensing and adaptability varies greatly between these types. [3]

Contemporary directions

Recent research explores perception-rich manipulation, learning from demonstrations, embodied AI and mobile autonomy. Modern AI is one influence on robotics, but mechanical design, control, safety and maintenance remain central. [4]
