Decentralized identity is an umbrella term for architectures in which identifiers or credentials can be controlled or verified without depending on one centralized identity provider for every interaction. Different implementations make different choices about registries, keys, wallets and trust. [1]
Decentralized identifiers
The W3C Decentralized Identifiers (DIDs) v1.0 Recommendation defines a URI-based identifier model and DID documents describing verification methods and services. A DID does not automatically establish real-world identity or authorize an action. [2]
Credentials and trust
Verifiable credentials can provide structured statements from issuers to holders and verifiers. A successful cryptographic check does not mean every underlying claim is true, current or appropriate for a use case. [3]
Potential machine applications
Some machine ecosystems may use decentralized identifiers to express device identity or credentials. Such deployments require key recovery, revocation, authorization policies and operational governance; the W3C specifications are not robot safety certifications. [4]
