Autonomous AI agents are software-based systems designed to choose and execute actions toward assigned objectives with varying levels of human direction. They may search for information, call tools, create plans or coordinate with other software systems; the degree of autonomy is a design choice. [1]

Agent workflow

A typical design connects an input or objective to state estimation, planning, action execution and feedback. Some agents maintain task memory or use external services. A system may be described as agentic without controlling a physical machine. [2]

Connections to robotics

An agent that commands motors or connected devices becomes part of a cyber-physical system. Unlike a text-only assistant, such a system must consider actuator limits, timing and the consequences of incorrect commands. [3]

Controls

Practical safeguards include scope-limited permissions, action confirmation, logs, task boundaries and independent safety interlocks. An agent identity or API credential authenticates a component; it does not establish that its decisions are safe. [4]
