Identification and trust for physical AI systems

Physical AI identity is a useful umbrella expression for how a robot, autonomous device, or other AI-enabled physical system can be identified and trusted within its operating environment. The phrase describes a cross-disciplinary topic; it is not presented here as a formally standardized identity framework. A system's technical identity should be distinguished from its behavior, intelligence, legal status, and any claims about consciousness. [1]

Identity versus authentication

An identifier distinguishes a system within a given scope. An authentication process supplies evidence that an entity controls the credential associated with an identity. Authorization then determines permitted actions. A serial number by itself does not authenticate a device, and successful authentication does not imply a robot is safe.

Typical building blocks

Implementations can use manufacturer identifiers, device inventories, public-key certificates, protected private keys, signed software, access policies, and event logs. Cryptographic-key lifecycle management includes generation, storage, rotation and revocation. Verifiable credentials are another possible mechanism for asserting attributes, but their trust and governance assumptions differ from certificate-based PKI.[2][3]

Practical lifecycle

A proposed lifecycle can include provisioning a device identity, verifying its configuration, authenticating communications, granting task-scoped permissions, monitoring relevant actions, and revoking credentials when ownership or trust changes. These are design considerations, not a claim that one global robot-identity registry exists.

Standards context

NIST SP 800-207 describes zero trust as removing implicit trust based solely on network location. NIST SP 800-63-4 primarily concerns human digital identity and should not be treated as an equipment-identity certification standard.[4][5]
